Now is the perfect time to make some summer crochet items, wouldn't you agree?
This was one of my very first patterns created and it is a quick fun beginner friendly make! Pattern is made to measure, you can adjust the length, it does not have to be a mini skirt if you want to make a floor length one!
It works up perfectly using cotton yarn.
You can use any type of yarn (great stash buster) and suitable crochet hook.
Abbreviations:
st(s): stitch(es)
ch: chain
sl. st.: slip stitch
beg: beginning
sc: single crochet
tr: treble crochet
(__)* repeat
Because this pattern is made to measure, you will be working to your own gauge and will work out the starter chain length according to your own measurements and yarn/hook used.
Start by making a crochet swatch by chaining 20, then skip one and sc into each chain (19 sts), chain one, turn work and sc into each stitch, repeat another 3 times.
Measure the length of your rectangle:
This pattern is worked in multiples of 19 stitches. Swatch will help you to work out how many multiples of 19 you will need for your starting chain.
Measure around the widest part of your hips or waist (whichever is wider). Then use the formula below to calculate your stitch count:
Now the fun bit 😊
Start by creating a slip knot and chain your required foundation chains in multiples of 19, plus additional 1 chain. TIP: leave bit of a tail at the start of your work for sewing.
ROW 1: skip one and sc into each foundation chain. When you reach the end of the row, sl. st into the first sc to create a circle. Sew in the little gap left below to where you just slip stitched, you can use the tail from the start of your foundation chain row.
This is the easiest way to create a starter circle for your work. Some patterns would advise you to slip stitch the chain row together to form a circle but I find that it’s hard to keep your circle from twisting when doing this. You can use your preferred method here.
ROUND 2: chain 3, skip one, sc into next st, (ch 2, skip 1, sc)* repeat until the end of the round.
Depending on if your starting chain is an even number or odd number, the last sc will either be in the sc row below or in the first loop of round 2.
ROUND 3: add the stitch marker into the first sc and then place 2 sc into each of the loops, you need to keep the count of multiples of 19, so please keep counting, this is the last round you need to do this. Depending on your stitch count (odd or even) you will have either one or two sc stitches in the last loop.
ROUND 4 onwards: you will be working in continuous rounds, making one sc into each stitch. There are no rules about colour change, you can use as many colours as you like or use one colour only (or try colour changing yarn).
TIP: to keep the count on where your row starts/ends, use a stitch marker at the beginning of each round.
I made a colour change after 10 rounds and then after 5 rounds. Top part of my skirt is 15 cm but you can make yours to suit your own body.
If you prefer working with pdf document (includes lots of step by step photos), you can buy one from my shop.
BOTTOM HALF OF THE SKIRT:
When you have made the top half of the skirt the length you are happy with, start the wavy part at the bottom half.
ROUND 1: Change colour if you wish and chain 4 (this counts as a first treble), then make four treble crochet stitches into the same stitch. Another treble into the following stitch, then (skip one, tr)* repeat instructions in the brackets 8 times. Add 5 treble crochet stitches into the next stitch. This is your repeat pattern:
5 x tr, tr, (skip one, tr)* 8 times, 5 x tr (19 sts).
ROUND 2: If you are changing colour before round two, do not finish the last treble, add a new colour to complete the stitch.
Slip stitch to the top of the beg ch-4, chain 1, sc into the same stitch. Then sc into each stitch all the way around and sl. st. to beg ch-1 to finish.
From here you will be repeating the rounds one and two until you get desired length for your skirt.
TIP: make sure your first ch-4 + 4 tr cluster is always on the top of the ch-4 from two rows below.
Once you are happy with the length of your skirt, sew in all the ends.
BELT STRING:
For the belt I made a chain of 200, using 3 strands of yarn held together. I also left a longer starting tail and one at the end, for a bit of a tassel effect. You might need to chain less or more depending on your own personal size.
Feed the string through the loops, in one, out the other. I like to keep my string tied to the side of the skirt but it’s personal preference.
Happy crocheting!
