Pause to make a paw

Fancy a quick crochet make? These little paw prints work up really fast and only use easy beginner friendly stitches. Make them for yourself, an animal lover friend or why not sell some to support an animal charity?

You will need:

● 4 mm crochet hook

● Yarn needle, scissors

● DK (size 3) brown yarn:

approximately: 5 m per paw print

OPTIONAL: blocking board and spray

starch

Abbreviations:

st(s): stitch(es)

R: round

ch: chain

FO: Fasten off

slst: slip stitch

beg: beginning

sc: single crochet

Paw print:

Start by creating a slip knot and chain 11.

R 1: slst into the first chain to form a circle.

R 2: ch 1, sc 28 into the circle, slst to beg ch-1 to finish. (28 sts)

R 3: ch 3, skip one st, slst into next st, (ch 5, skip one st, slst into next st) x 2, ch 3, skip one st, slst into next st. Turn work. (4 loops)

R 4: sc 5 into first loop, sc 8 into second and third loop, sc 5 into fourth loop, slst into next

st to finish.

Fasten off leaving a long tail for making a hanging string. If you are making an applique,

you can weave in the ends here.

With a yarn needle, pull through about 5 stitches at the back of the paw until the middle

of the second ‘toe’, leave enough loose string for hanging and sew into the back of the third

‘toe’ securely. Then sew in the loose end of the yarn.

Shaping the paw:

Wet the work throughout, pull to desired shape by squeezing it between the thumb and index finger and gently pulling sideways.

Leave to dry for 24 hours.

OPTIONAL: If you would like your work to be hardened, you can spray the piece with starch

spray until it’s saturated. Shape the paw and leave it to dry overnight.

I found that water is enough to keep the shape, it just does not harden the paw.

Alternatively you might prefer a round shape paw print without shaping.

PDF version of this pattern is free in my shop and has step by step photos, you are welcome to download and keep it.

Hope you find lots of ways to use your pawprints! How about fancy dog treat jar, Christmas tree decoration, bag charm or keyring? Can you think of anything else?
