Happy crocheting. Any questions, please get in touch!

Level of difficulty: Confident Beginner*

Crochet language:  US Crochet terms

Gauge/tension is not important for this pattern, headband is made to measure.

This pattern requires basic knowledge of the following skills:

  • Half a double crochet

  • How to crochet in rows

You will need:

  • 7 mm crochet hook

  • Yarn needle

  • Measuring tape

  • Scissors

  • Yarn: Chunky/Bulky* (size 5) in any colour (approximately 60-70g or 90-100 yards).

*You can use different types of yarn with a different hook to get either a wider or narrower headband. Photo below shows headband made with chunky/bulky yarn (width 6.3”) and aran/worsted yarn (width 5”)

Please use suitable hook for the yarn you are using

Special stitches:

Beginning star: Insert hook into second chain from your hook, pull up a loop, insert hook into next chain, pull up a loop, insert hook into next stitch, pull up a loop, insert hook into next stitch, pull up a loop (5 loops on your hook), yarn over and pull through all 5 loops, ch 1 to close the star and create the ‘eye’ of the star. (Do not make your chain too tight, you will need to work into the ‘eye’ when making the next star.

Star stitch: Insert hook into ‘eye’ of the previous star, pull up a loop, insert hook underneath the last ‘leg’ of the previous star (same stitch as the last stitch of the previous star), pull up a loop, insert hook into next stitch, pull up a loop, insert hook into next stitch, pull up a loop (5 loops on the hook), yarn over and pull through all 5 loops, ch 1 to close the star and create the ‘eye’.

Abbreviations:

st(s): stitch(es)

R: row

star: star stitch

beg star: first star stitch of the row

hdc: half double crochet

Star studded headband:

Measure the circumference of your head first. Your head band will have 2-3” of negative ease, depending on the stretch of your yarn used. My head is 23” and I made my headband 20” long before joining together.

NOTE: You will be working in rows and turning work after completing each row.

Tip: Mark the first stitch of each round with a stitch marker.

Chain 24. If you would like your headband to be wider, add chains in multiples of 2, if you would like your headband to be narrower, reduce chains in multiples of 2. Please be aware that changing the starter chain length will also change the star count per row. You can also use different weight yarn and same stitch count to make your headband wider/narrower.

R 1: Make a beg star, then make 9 more stars into the chain you created, hdc into the final st (10 stars, 1 hdc).

R 2: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), 2 hdc into each ‘eye’ of the star across, hdc into final space (top of beg chain of previous row) (22 hdc sts).

R 3: Ch 3, beg star, star 9 times, hdc (10 stars, 1 hdc). Remember to start your beg star from the second chain from your hook.

R 4: Repeat row 2.

Keep repeating row 3 and 2, until you reach the length you measured out when starting the pattern, finish repeat with row 2.

Assembly (creating the twist):

Place the finished piece in front of you, right side facing you.

Fold over the right hand side bottom corner to match the centre of the top side, now the wrong side of work is facing you.

Fold the right hand side corner across your work and then the left hand side corner behind your work to create a 4-way fold.

Before committing to sewing, you can hold this fold in place with your hand (or stitch markers) and flip your headband so that the right side of your work is facing you; that way you can check that your twist is correct before sewing.

Sew across all four sides, from end to end. Sew in all ends, turn your headband the right way around and wear proudly.
